The unknown south land
The existence of this great south land was derived from the ideas of the early Greek geographers.  They believed there must be a large landmass around the South Pole to "balance" the known land in the northern hemisphere.  They named it the opposite of the Arctic, The Anti-Arktikos or Antarctica.

Captain "Nomad" McGuinness was pivotal to Admiral Byrd in the planning and execution of the expedition.  McGuinness was instrumental in locating and evaluating the vessels; City of New York especially, and the Elinore Boling.  But as an Irishman on an American expedition, and since they two skippers were political appointees in the expedition, Byrd asked McGuinness to play the number two role officially, until they left the U.S.  So he set sail as first officer about the Elinore Boling, until they reach Panama - then he assumes his post there.
